Begin with the beginnings

by Nathan Rutz

It’s too late to begin at the total beginning, though I suppose I could look for some pictures of the back yard before I started doing anything with it.

This picture was from when the house was listed for sale.

First compost pile, steaming, covered in saw dust from sanding the 130 year old red pine floor downstairs.

First compost pile and leaves that Aaron and I picked up off of people’s lawns on trash day

A nice fellow named Kenny that has a tree service dumped a few loads of chips and stumps for free

On a fine fall afternoon Aaron and I made some wood piles for Sepp Holzer-esque hugul beds. I was lazy and didn’t think to dig trenches for them, which in retrospect seems like a good idea.

Image

Kenny also dumped off a bunch of pine needles. I didn’t have a wheel barrow at the time so we used trash cans.

I was rather pleased with the size of the thing!

Before I dug this 3rd hugul bed, I got a load of horse manure and incorporated into the first bed. The second I considered unfinished because I want to incorporate more nitrogenous material with the wood. Perhaps some coffee grounds will do…

I filled the trench with wood chips. Image

There’s a second compost pile now. I moved the first on for aeration. The second one is mostly coffee grounds from the W 6 Starbucks and Pour Cleveland. I pick up 5-12 gallons a day. I plan to begin picking up rotten vegetables from the local supermarkets. There are 4 pretty large ones, 3 of which are Asian which presents a communication challenge.

Hopefully future updates will be more interestingly written.
